Short term memory loss can also be a sign of other conditions, such as Depression, Thyroid problems, Vitamin B deficiencies, chest infection or the most common type a Urine infection. All of these conditions are treatable but can cause quite severe short term changes to a person’s memory and behaviour.

 

Visiting a GP usually results in the chest or urine infection being treated with an anti-biotic and within a short time the infection has resolved. However, Depression, Thyroid problems & Vitamin B Deficiencies would need to be treated appropriately by the GP.

 

There may be medication that could help in the case of an Alzheimer’s type dementia diagnosis. This medication called a Cognitive Enhancer can help slow the symptoms of the Alzheimer’s Disease down but will not halt it as there is not yet a cure.

 

Every person with a diagnosis has a right to know about it which then allows them to seek support and information and make their own plans for the future.
